Windows 11 KB5017383 hands on: Dynamic Widgets and more

Windows 11 KB5017383 is now available for the original version 21H2 with several improvements.

This patch is rolling out via Windows Update, but Microsoft has also printed direct download links for Home windows 11 KB5017383 offline installers on the Replace Catalog.

KB5017383 is an optional update and it won’t set up or even obtain in your device until you manually choose and install it. Note that this particular cumulative preview update is available on Windows 11 version 21H2 machines only (Windows 11 22H2 is excluded) and it advances PCs to Construct 22000.1042.

The update would show up as “2022-09 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 21H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5017383)” on Windows Update. To download and install it, merely click the download button and reboot the system when asked. It is a pretty big update and bugs including installation issues are expected.

Build 22000.1042 is an optional cumulative update and changes included in this patch will begin rolling out to everyone with October 2022 Patch Tuesday cycle. In other words, you can safely skip the update if you don’t need these fixes.

The update link opens Microsoft’s Update Catalog where you can click on the ‘Download’ button next to the model of the OS installed on your machine.

Microsoft is introducing a brand new characteristic referred to as “dynamic widgets”. This was previously exclusive to Windows 11 22H2, but it has been backported to model 21H2. With dynamic widgets, Microsoft is hoping to make the icon of the widget on the taskbar more engaging with regular updates.

At the moment, widgets icon sits quietly at the bottom left of your screen/taskbar. You’ll be able to customise it to your liking. For example, if you prefer breaking information alerts, you can depend on the icon for the notifications.

A badge will automatically appear when there is a news update or scores update from your favourite game. Likewise, financial updates will also seem directly on the taskbar. The purpose of dynamic widgets is to make the information available to the users at a glance without even needing to open Edge.

In addition to dynamic widgets integration, Microsoft has also fastened several points with Windows 11. For example, the company patched an issue where some apps would require reinstallation when you did not get the app from the Microsoft Store.

A Blue Screen of Death error has been fixed. Microsoft says the OS rendered a Blue Screen error when users changed the display mode when using more than one display. Another bug has been fastened where IE mode tabs were forced to reload a session. Likewise, Microsoft additionally fixed an issue that impacts IE mode after you open a PDF file.

Here’s a list of all other important bug fixes:

  • Fixed an issue that causes a black screen when you use a pen to turn on the high dynamic vary feature.
  • Fixed an issue where the touch keyboard crashes when you switch apps.
  • Fixed an issue that affects daylight saving time in Chile.
  • Fixed an issue with Desktop Window Manager (DWM) which might cause your device to stop responding when you use certain video graphics drivers.
  • Fixed an issue that affects graphics drivers.
  • Fixed an issue that affects URLs generated by JavaScript.
  • Fixed an issue that might cause an app to stop responding.
  • Fixed an issue that might cause a black screen.
  • Fixed an issue that might affect Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC) path rules.
  • Fixed an issue that causes LogonUI.exe to stop working.

As you can see, there are several important bug fixes in this release. Microsoft says the company is currently not aware of any potential known issue and we couldn’t find reports of new issues either.

It’s safe to assume that Windows 11’s new September 2022 update is pretty stable, but it’s always better to skip optional updates until you really need those fixes right now.
